Nollywood by Pieter Hugo @ Michael Stevenson

Pieter Hugo tem vindo a mostrar aqueles seres que todos gostaríamos de ignorar, que não existissem. Mantendo o seu olhar que é único, traz-nos uma série bem menos desconfortável.

Pieter Hugo
Nollywood

2008

In his new body of work, Pieter Hugo explores the multilayered reality of the Nigerian film industry. Nollywood is, surprisingly, the third largest film industry in the world, releasing onto the market between 500 and 1 000 movies each year.

Nollywood produces movies on its own terms, telling stories that appeal to and reflect the lives of its public: it is a rare instance of self-representation in Africa. The continent has a rich tradition of story-telling that has been expressed abundantly through oral and written fiction, but has never been conveyed through the mass media before. Stars are local actors; plots confront the public with familiar situations of romance, comedy, witchcraft, bribery, prostitution. The narrative is overdramatic, deprived of happy endings, tragic. The aesthetic is loud, violent, excessive; nothing is said, everything is shouted.

Hugo has been increasingly intrigued, in his travels through West Africa, by this hyperactive industry, in constant production despite tight budgets and strict production schedules. Over time he compiled a list of the iconic images and scenes that had attracted his attention, and he imagined photographing in these settings.

His first attempt to photograph on film sets documenting these scenes failed to produce pictures that fully mirrored the intensity of the situations. He then decided to bring his interpretation of these staged realities into another realm by assembling a team of forty actors and assistants. He asked them to recreate the stereotypical myths and symbols that characterise Nollywood productions, reproducing the dynamic of movie sets.

The tableaux of the series confront us with a verisimilar world: the situations are clearly surreal but they could be real on a set; furthermore, they are rooted in the local symbolic imaginary. The boundaries between documentary and fiction become very fluid, and we are left wondering whether our perceptions of the real world are indeed real.in http://www.michaelstevenson.com/contemporary/exhibitions/hugo/nollywood_index.htm

Estirpe

Florian Bohm: Wait for Walk

Exhibition: "Florian Bohm: Wait for Walk" September 10 - October 18, 2008

"The Cohen Amador Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition "Wait for Walk", color photographs by internationally renowned German photographer Florian Bohm from his book of the same title. Born into the tradition of post-war German photography, Bohm tenaciously grasps the objective formalizing methodologies of his predecessors and reworks their techniques through the socially engaged photographic styles of the conceptual, American, post-modern epoch. In the series, Bohm's temerity manifests itself in photographs of New Yorkers literally waiting for the walk signal to cross the street. A process of such banality, it casually escapes the attention of those waiting.
Bohm's technique underscores the repetition involved in waiting for the walk signal. Using a medium format 6 x 7 or 6 x 17 camera, Bohm positions himself across the street from his waiting subjects. Going largely unobserved, he shoots at the same level as his subjects, in well-lit conditions, at busy intersections thereby establishing a photographic paradigm that illuminates similarities and differences between his photos and the subjects. Though certainly influenced by American street-photography, Bohm's methods recall Bernd and Hilla Becher, whose style highlighted the individuality of things through strict, repetitive photographic tactics. Bohm's focus on people in the schizophrenic network of New York City, however, highlights the commercial urbanism of the 21st century in a conceptual manner reminiscent of Philip Lorca Di Corcia. The shared experience of waiting becomes a sociological platform upon which, as German sociologist Georg Stimmel puts it, Bohm investigates "the attempt of the individual to maintain the independence and individuality of his existence against the sovereign powers of society".
With regard to these "sovereign powers of society", the prevalence of shopping bags in Bohm's work serves as the most obvious signifier. A group of Asian tourists giggle and grasp their identical Coach bags, all caught up in the casual whimsy of spending the day shopping. Lord and Taylor, GAP, red plastic bags from Chinatown corner markets, businessmen and women on their lunch break with bags from Mangia, Subway, Hale and Hearty: it all bespeaks the dominating power of 21st century consumerism. Store signs loom enticingly in the background marking their territory and appropriating the urban environment. It is as though Baudelaire’s flaneur, out for a pleasant stroll in 19th century Paris, has become a hyper-consumer, chugging caffeine while on his or her cell phone on the way to Saks. Yet, it is here, amidst the depersonalizing powers of the city, that the subject’s individuality displays itself most clearly. Gestures, posture, body language all come into relief. By focusing on this momentary cessation of action, Bohm simultaneously elucidates the individual in the subliminally daunting metropolis, while highlighting a moment of social, economic and racial transcendence: everybody has to wait as the cars speed by: individuality, through the mannerisms exhibited during the simple act of waiting, flourishes.
Florian Bohm has exhibited widely throughout Europe and the US including Kunstwerke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, Store Front Art and Architecture in New York, Fondazione Adriano Olivetti in Rome and Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain in Paris. He is the author of several books and was co-founder of the project EndCommercial / Reading the City, a visual record of modern urban life lauded in journals and papers such as the New York Times and Art Forum. Canon EOS 5D MkII

Imagem Dpreview

Albert Watson may be blind in one eye (a fact hinted at in the title of his legendary book, Cyclops), but this does not diminish his ability to see in any way. Whatever he captures on camera - whether it be Mick Jagger, the hand of a chimpanzee, Kate Moss in Morocco, or a domina in Las Vegas - he creates an iconic image.

From September 2008, a collection of his work will be on display at the NRW-Forum. This retrospective will cover a wide range of photos from early icons to brand new studio photos.

Over the course of the past few decades, Albert Watson has not only become one of the world's most successful fashion and advertising photographers, he has also developed his very own art form. Down through the years, his incredible photos have graced the cover of Vogue over 250 times and have been published in countless other publications including Rolling Stone, Time, and Vibe. Many of his photos are classic portraits of famous people.

Albert Watson has also spent a lot of time fine-tuning his art, creating impressive records of his travels around the world, from Marrakech to Las Vegas and the Orkneys. Although the vast scope of his photos are effortless in their variety, they are all clearly identifiable as Albert Watson photographs by virtue of their power and his virtuosity of technique. Whatever he points his lens at, be it a domina in Las Vegas or Tutankhamun's socks, Albert Watson turns out breath-taking photographs. It is this uncompromising quest for perfection that makes Albert Watson one of the most popular photographers in the world. Born and raised in Scotland, Albert Watson studied at the Royal College of Art in London before moving to the United States in 1970. He lives and works in New York.
